CHAPTER 18
Dani went for her run in the park, but instead of doing it early, as usual, she had decided to sleep in, for once, and do it later in the afternoon. She had gone to the gym around eight and returned home to shower and change. After that, she had eaten a nice lunch sheâd prepared herself, gone for the run, then returned home, showered for the second time that day, and decided sheâd take her camera for a walk.
As she stared at the camera Steven had bought for her, she wondered about the protocol now. It was a gift. It was an expensive gift, but it was a gift. She knew he wouldnât take it back, but it also felt strange using it now to take pictures of her adventures. She decided she would go out and splurge on a new camera for herself and give this one to her parents. They could use it for their annual Christmas party or maybe give it to her brother. She packed it back up into the nice bag Steven had presented it to her in, and grabbed her purse and jacket.
She had looked up a few camera shops that were near her apartment and decided she would walk to the closest one first. She had no idea what questions to ask. All she knew was that she liked taking pictures, that she went to some of the most beautiful places on earth, thanks to her job, and that she couldnât use Stevenâs camera anymore. The first shop turned out to be closed, because someone was on a break and put a sign up saying they would be back in thirty minutes. So, she looked up the second closest store, hopped on the subway, and kept her head down once she sat in the car.
It was true that Dani had gotten recognized more recently, thanks to her relationship with Peyton. She wasnât in the mood to deal with that today, though. Today, she just wanted to buy a new camera and take it around the city to see what she could discover. She made her way back up to the street just in time to see a striking woman step out of a black SUV. She smiled at Peytonâs overly large sunglasses, as if those would prevent people from recognizing her. She looked down at her own phone in her hand and quickly, without thinking, called her.
âHey,â Peyton greeted.
âHey. What are you up to?â Dani asked, knowing the answer already after having watched Peyton enter a restaurant, likely for a late lunch or early dinner.
âTaking my mom to linner, as she calls it,â Peyton answered with a laugh. âWe had a brunch today. So, sheâs just now hungry for lunch.â
âOh, right. I forgot your mom was in town. Sorry.â Dani started looking around for the camera shop that should be across the street.
âItâs okay. What are you up to?â Peyton asked.
âNot stalking you, I promise.â Dani laughed. âI just got out of the subway and saw you walk into the restaurant.
